Which rules run on a 60-day clock?
- IRA 60-day rollover IRS says money withdrawn from one traditional IRA can be moved tax free if it is reinvested within 60 days in the same or another traditional IRA. IRS Publication 590-A
- New York notice, tenancy 1-2 years New York requires at least 60 days' notice of a rent increase of 5% or more or of non-renewal when the tenant has occupied the home one to two years. NY Real Property Law 226-c
- California notice, resided 1 year or more Under California Civil Code 1946.1(b) an owner ending a periodic residential tenancy gives at least 60 days notice; the 30-day period applies only when the tenant has lived there under one year. California Civil Code 1946.1 (california.public.law mirror; leginfo.legislature.ca.gov returns 403 to scripts)
What is the 60-day IRA rollover?
IRS Publication 590-A describes a rollover from one traditional IRA to another. If you take money out, you can avoid tax on it by putting it back into the same IRA or another traditional IRA within 60 days. The window is stated in days, so weekends and federal holidays inside it still count. Day 60 from the withdrawal is the date in the answer box if you withdrew today.
That makes the gap between 60 days and two months more than a detail. A withdrawal on Jan 1, 2027 has a 60-day mark of Tue, Mar 2. Someone who counts "two months" would land on Mon, Mar 1, which is safe. Start on Jun 1 and two months is Aug 1, but day 60 is Jul 31, one day sooner. Counting months instead of days can put you a day late.
Where else does 60 days appear?
Rental notices again, at the next step up. In California, Civil Code 1946.1 sets 60 days as the notice an owner gives to end a periodic tenancy once the tenant has lived there a year or more. In New York, Real Property Law 226-c sets at least 60 days' notice for a tenant of one to two years. It applies before a rent increase of 5% or more, or a non-renewal.
Both rules count from the day notice is given. The table below shows how far 60 days reaches from the first of each month, so you can see where it crosses into a third month.
