What runs on a 90-day count?

  • Schengen 90/180 rule For short stays, the Schengen Borders Code sets a limit of 90 days in any 180-day period, counted over the 180 days before each day of stay. Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (Schengen Borders Code), EUR-Lex
  • New York notice, tenancy 2+ years New York requires at least 90 days' notice of a rent increase of 5% or more or of non-renewal when the tenant has occupied the home two years or more. NY Real Property Law 226-c

How does the Schengen 90-day limit work?

For short visits to the Schengen area, the Schengen Borders Code allows no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. The key word is "any." The 180 days are not a calendar half-year. On each day of a trip, you look back over the previous 180 days and count how many of them you spent inside the area. If that number would pass 90, the limit is reached.

That makes "90 days from today" only part of the answer for a traveler. If you arrive today with no earlier visits in the last 180 days, day 90 of a continuous stay is the date in the answer box. If you visited earlier, those days still sit inside the look-back window and use up part of the 90. Our days-between calculator can count past trips, and the 180-days page shows when the window rolls forward.

Where does 90 days appear in US rental law?

New York's Real Property Law 226-c sets the longest of its three notice periods at 90 days. It applies when a tenant has occupied the home for two years or more. Before a rent increase of 5% or more, or before a decision not to renew, the landlord gives at least 90 days' notice. Shorter tenancies get 30 or 60 days, each with its own page.

Why do 90 days and three months drift apart?

Three calendar months contain 89 to 92 days, depending on which months they are. The table below starts a count on the first of each month in 2027 and shows both endings side by side. The two agree only once, from Jan 1, 2027. In every other row, 90 days ends one to two days before the three-month mark, except from February, where it ends a day after.
