Where do 30-day deadlines come from?
- Texas month-to-month notice A Texas month-to-month tenancy ends on the later of the day named in the notice or one month after the notice is given, when rent is paid at least monthly. Texas Property Code 91.001 (texas.public.law mirror)

Where do 30-day deadlines show up?
The most common place is a rental notice. Three large states write the rule in different ways, and the difference changes the date you count to.
California. Civil Code 1946.1 sets the notice an owner gives to end a periodic residential tenancy. It is 30 days when the tenant has lived in the home for less than one year. After a year, the owner's notice becomes 60 days. The 30-day figure is a count of days, so the calculator above gives the end date directly.
New York. Real Property Law 226-c ties notice to how long the tenant has been there. Under one year, a landlord gives at least 30 days' notice before a rent increase of 5% or more, or before deciding not to renew. Longer tenancies get 60 or 90 days, which have their own pages.
Texas. Property Code 91.001 is written in months, not days. A month-to-month tenancy ends on the later of the date in the notice or one month after the notice is given. One month and 30 days are not the same length, which is what the table below shows.

Calculated by DayReckon. 30 days and one month match only when the starting month has 30 days. From Feb 1, 2027, 30 days lands on Wed, Mar 3, but one month later is Mon, Mar 1.
Why does "one month" not equal 30 days?
Months have 28 to 31 days. Start on Jan 1, 2027 and 30 days ends on Sun, Jan 31, while one month ends on Mon, Feb 1. Start on Feb 1 and the order reverses: 30 days reaches Wed, Mar 3, but one month is Mon, Mar 1. Only a start in a 30-day month lines the two up. When a document says "30 days," count days. When it says "one month," count to the same date next month.
What if the 30th day is a weekend?
The calendar count does not care. Day 30 is day 30, even on a Sunday. Some rules move a deadline to the next business day, and some do not, so read the rule that applies to you. The business-day figure in the answer box shows the other way of counting.
Notice rules here are summaries of the law for date-counting. They are not legal advice. Rules have exceptions; check the statute or a local housing agency for your case.
Questions people ask
- What date is 30 days from today?
- It is Fri, Nov 6, 2026. We count today as day zero, so day 30 is the date shown. If a rule counts today as day 1, the deadline is one day earlier. The date calculator lets you switch between the two methods.
- Is a 30-day notice the same as one month?
- Not always. 30 days from January 1, 2027 is Jan 31, but one month later is Feb 1. From February 1 the order flips: 30 days is Mar 3, and one month is Mar 1. Texas, for one, writes its month-to-month rule in months, not days.
- What is 30 business days from today?
- 30 business days from today is Fri, Nov 20, 2026. That skips Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays, so it usually lands about six calendar weeks out. A holiday in between pushes it one day further for each holiday.
