How to count days until a date

Checked October 8, 2026 · first publish

Subtract today's date from the target date and do not count today. From Sun, Oct 11, 2026 to Fri, Dec 25, 2026 that is 75 days. If you count both today and the target day, add 1. Counting nights (sleeps) gives the same 75.

Three live examples, counted from today

Days until Christmas Day (fixed date, all-day)
79days
Hours until the December solstice (an exact instant, 20:50 UTC)
1,800hours
Business days until Thanksgiving (weekends and federal holidays removed)

These update every time the page loads. The numbers under each show the method used.

Do you include today in the count?

This is the question behind most "off by one" arguments. There are two honest answers, and they differ by exactly one.

The countdown method leaves today out. Today is day zero, tomorrow is 1 day away, and the target date is reached when the count hits zero. That is how every counter on this site works. From Sun, Oct 11, 2026 to Fri, Dec 25, 2026, the countdown method gives 75 days.

The inclusive method counts both ends. It answers a different question: how many calendar days does a period cover? A conference from Monday to Friday covers 5 days, even though Friday is only 4 days after Monday. If a form asks how many days a period spans, the inclusive count is usually what it wants. Add 1 to our result to get it, or tick "Count the last day too" in the days-between calculator.

Counting nights gives the same number as the countdown method. Each night ends in a new morning, so 75 days until Christmas is also 75 sleeps.

Which midnight does the day change at?

Your own. A date changes at midnight in your time zone, so "days until" ticks down at different moments across the country. When it is 11 p.m. on Wednesday in Los Angeles, it is already 2 a.m. on Thursday in New York, and the New York count is one lower for those three hours.

We handle that in two layers. The text of each page is built once a day, after midnight in New York, so the number in the title and answer box uses Eastern time. The live counter then recalculates on your device with your own clock. If you are in the Pacific or Hawaii time zones, you may see the two differ by one late in the evening. The live counter is the one to trust for where you are.

Some targets are not midnight at all. A solstice or equinox is one instant for the whole planet; the December 2026 solstice is at 20:50 UTC, which is 3:50 p.m. in New York. For those pages, the counter runs to that exact minute.

Why does daylight saving time change the hours?

Twice a year, a day is not 24 hours long. Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March, and that day has 23 hours. It ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November, and that day has 25. If your count crosses either change, the hours remaining are not the days times 24.

The day count is not affected, because a date is still a date. Our live counters work from real elapsed time to the target instant, so the hours and minutes stay correct across the change. A spreadsheet that multiplies days by 24 will be off by one hour.

How do you count weeks, weekends and months?

Weeks are days divided by 7. 75 days is 10 weeks and 5 days. Weekends are a separate count: the number of Saturdays strictly between today and the target. Many people plan by weekends, not weeks, so the line under each counter shows both.

Months are harder because they vary in length. We step forward one calendar month at a time, keeping the same day number, until the next step would overshoot. Then we count the leftover days. When the day number does not exist in the next month, we stop at the month's last day: one month after Jan 31, 2027 is Feb 28, 2027.

How do you count business days?

Skip Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays on their observed dates. The start day is not counted; the end day is. The guide to business days covers the rules in detail, including the cases where banks and federal offices disagree.

How can you check a count by hand?

Use the weekday. Every 7 days the weekday repeats, so the remainder after dividing by 7 tells you how far the weekday moves. Take Sun, Oct 11, 2026, when Christmas is 75 days away: 75 divided by 7 leaves 5, and five days after Sunday is Friday. Christmas 2026 is a Friday, so the count checks out. If the weekday does not match, someone counted with a different method.

Questions people ask

Do you count today when counting days until a date?
On this site, no. Today is day zero, so tomorrow is 1 day away. That matches how a countdown reaches zero on the day itself. If you are measuring how long an event lasts, counting both ends is more natural, and the result is one higher.
How do I count weeks until a date?
Count the days, then divide by 7. The whole number is full weeks and the remainder is extra days: 75 days is 10 weeks and 5 days. Weekends until a date is a different count, the number of Saturdays still ahead.
Why is the hour count off by one around March and November?
Because a daylight saving change makes one day 23 or 25 hours long. Between now and a date after the change, the hours do not equal days times 24. Our live counters count real elapsed time, so they handle it.
How do I count months until a date?
Step forward one calendar month at a time until the next step would pass the target, then count the remaining days. From Jan 31 to Mar 1, 2027 that gives 1 month and 1 day, because one month after Jan 31 is Feb 28.
