When do you need 180 days, and when six months?

Why do 180 days and six months end on different dates?

A half-year of calendar months holds 181 to 184 days. February is the short one, and the 31-day months add up. So six months from a date is always a little later than 180 days from it. The table below starts on the first of each month in 2027. From Jan 1 and Feb 1 the gap is one day. From Mar 1, May 1, Jul 1 and Aug 1 it is four days. People search "180 days from today" and "6 months from today" as nearly the same question, which is why both answers sit on this page.

How does the Schengen 180-day window move?

The Schengen Borders Code limits short stays to 90 days in any 180-day period. The 180 days are a moving reference period: on each day of a stay, you look back across the 180 days before it. A day spent in the area today keeps counting against you until it slides out of that look-back window, roughly 180 days later. That is the practical use of the date in the answer box for a traveler: it shows when today drops off the back of the window.

Why does the IRS use 183 days instead?

The IRS substantial presence test is often confused with a 180-day rule. It uses 183 days, and it is weighted. You need at least 31 days in the current year. You also need 183 in total, adding all of this year's days, one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before. So 180 calendar days in one place does not settle anything by itself for this test.

The Schengen and IRS rules are summarized for counting only. This is not tax or immigration advice; read the source or ask the agency about your case.
